International Driving Permit when travelling to US

Many people asked me if we really need to go through all the pain to get International Driving Permit( in short IDP) when travelling to US. I tell them that it's not required. Usually people plan to get this International Driving Permit a week before travelling, that is the time you are most busy shopping and packing stuff. To get this permit you will have to run around the Government offices. We traveled to US from Bangalore. When we tried to get IDP from Bangalore, we realized that first we had to transfer our Andhra license to Karnataka and then apply for IDP; All the middle men near Bangalore Transport department office charged us nearly Rs.5000 for this whole process :). We decided it's not worth it. If you are coming for a short term stay and if Indian driving license is not permitted in the state you are travelling, may be you can put that effort. Otherwise, if you are coming here for a long term, it's of not much use. Since, Driving License is a must here, you can as well put that extra effort after coming to US and get the license here asap. Also, in states like California, you can drive and rent a vehicle with Indian driving license itself.

Driving test in US

Driving has always been an impossible feat for me....But, living in US, I cannot escape. When we lived in Santa Clara, California we were able to manage using Public transportation, but in Las Vegas where we moved recently, it's a must to learn driving. So, I decided to give it a try. Though, I had my Indian driving license, I never drove in India....I got this license long time back....and I still don't recall, how they passed me in India :). Last week, I decided to prepare for Instruction permit test. I went through the .pdf document we find in the dmv site. It was lot of information, that everything flew above my head :) Finally, my husband suggested online free preparation site. http://driversprep.com/ This site was a great help for me and I cleared my test. I chose to give the test in Henderson, Nevada, since it was lesser crowd and near home.
Now, I started learning for the Behind the wheels test...Wish me good luck :)
